Passive Homes

What is a Passive House?
The Passive House is the fastest growing energy performance standard in the world with 30,000 buildings realised to date, the majority of those since 2000. The Passive House Standards strengths lie in the simplicity of its approach that is to build a house that has an excellent thermal performance, exceptional air tightness with whole house mechanical ventilation.

This robust approach to building design allows the designer to minimise the 'Heating Demand' of the building and in some residential buildings only specify a heated towel rail as means of conventional heating, this heat can then be recovered and circulated by a Mechanical Ventilation and Heat Recovery (MVHR) unit.

As well as being an energy performance standard a Passive House also provides excellent indoor air quality, this is achieved by reducing the air infiltration rates and supplying fresh air which is filtered and post heated by the MVHR unit.

Passive dwellings:

• Are the worlds leading standard in energy efficient construction
• Utilise energy efficient components and a whole house Heat Recovery System to achieve exceptional levels of energy efficiency and low running costs
• Are comfortable, healthy and sustainable

Basic Principles

A dwelling which achieves the Passive House standard typically includes:
• Exceptional levels of insulation with minimal thermal bridges
• Levels of air tightness at 0.6 Air changes per hour or below
• Excellent indoor air quality, provided by a whole house Heat Recovery System
• High Performance Windows & Doors with U Values typically at 0.8 or below
We at The Green Build Centre offer a number of high performance building technologies that will assist you in meeting the Passive House standards. These include:
• A High Performance Building Envelope with minimal Thermal Bridging
• Air tight Building Envelope
• Renewable Technologies for both Space and Water heating
• 92% plus Efficient Whole House Heat Recovery Systems
• High Performance Windows and Doors
